Book Launch “Asylum for Sale: Profit and Protest in the Migration Industry”

  • The Potter's House 1658 Columbia Road Northwest Washington, DC, 20009 United States (map)

The Potter’s House is thrilled to celebrate the launch of the anthology Asylum for Sale: Profit and Protest in the Migration Industry. Join the book’s editors Siobhan McGuirk and Adrienne Pine for a special conversation with migration attorney and activist Arturo J. Viscarra, followed by a Q&A.  The event will be streamed live to The Potter’s House Facebook Page, and audience questions are encouraged.

Asylum for Sale, published by PM Press, brings together academics, activists, journalists, artists, and asylum seekers. Together, contributors explore how current practices of migration align with the neoliberal moment while presenting transformative visions for alternative systems and processes. At its core, the volume regards the global asylum regime as an industry characterized by profit-making: from brokers who facilitate border crossings; to contractors erecting walls and fences and corporations running private detention centers; to lawyers charging exorbitant fees and NGO staff establishing careers while placing asylum seekers into new regimes of surveillance. The groundbreaking mix of chapters, co-edited by anthropologists Siobhán McGuirk and Adrienne Pine is contextualized within current US politics, the aftermath of Europe’s refugee crisis, and Australia’s push towards offshore detention.

Naomi Klein writes of Asylum for Sale: “This book is part of how we fight back: connecting the extraordinary stories and insights of people studying, personally navigating, and creatively resisting the global asylum industry. An unparalleled resource.”

Join us by tuning in live on Thursday, April 1st at 7:00pm to The Potter’s House Facebook Page or PM Press’s Youtube Channel.
