Bart Grooms has been involved in the arts as a journalist, radio host, singer, actor, and narrator since the mid-1970s. Since 2007 he has hosted the classic jazz radio show “Tuxedo Junction” on WAJH-FM (weekdays; www.jazzhall.com). He wrote for the West coast music magazines Op, Sound Choice, and Option in the 1980s and 90s, then for Birmingham’s Black & White for twenty years, and more recently for ArtsBham.com, Weld, and UAB Magazine. He has narrated for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (for the Shostakovich Seventh Symphony and Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait) and twice with The Concertmaster and Friends series, including Wynton Marsalis’ A Fiddler’s Tale, which The Birmingham News’ Michael Huebner listed as one of the “Ten 5-Star Concerts” of 2013. He has lectured on jazz as well as on European and North Indian classical music at Samford University, UAB, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Birmingham Music Club, Independent Presbyterian Church, and the ASO. He is a longtime member of the choir at The Baptist Church of the Covenant and has been known to sit in with jazz groups. In the 1980s he was the vocalist for UAB’s Goodtime Jazz Band and in 2016 was featured guest with Birmingham’s Superjazz big band. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 2008, which meant a lot to him (after all, how often do one’s name and Nat King Cole’s appear on the same list?).
