The Queen with Author Josh Levin

  • The Potter's House 1658 Columbia Road Northwest Washington, DC, 20009 United States (map)

Join The Potter's House for a Author talk with Josh Levin about his critically acclaimed book, The Queen: The Forgotten Life Behind an American Legend. In the tradition of investigative reporting, Josh Levin exposes how a story that once shaped the nation's conscience was clouded by racism and lies. While Levin addresses stereotypes, welfare politics and political rhetoric, the author's true goal is to put a face to the bogeywoman that Reagan exploited during his election. He presents Linda Taylor, the "welfare queen", not as a parable for anything grand, but as a singular American scoundrel who represents nothing but herself. As he stunningly reveals, the deeper truth, the messy truth, tells us something much larger about who we are.

Josh Levin is an American writer and executive editor at Slate magazine. He is also the host of the sports podcast Hang Up and Listen. He previously worked at the Washington City Paper and has written for Sports Illustrated, the Atlantic, GQ, and Play: The New York Times Sports Magazine. He was born and raised in New Orleans and is a graduate of Brown University. He lives in Washington, D.C.
