In “A Language the Land Is Inventing”, poet Ann Philips comes near to inventing a language herself, one brimming with grace and empathy, capable of rendering the familiar sublime and the sublime familiar. She can conjure a resurrection with a single couplet: In the olive grove a man might sleep two thousand years/ and wake to find it spring and the olives ripening on their silvered leaves. A journey through these passionate poems will take you from Alaska to Galilee, from County Meath in Ireland to Audrain County in Missouri, and from present-day Dominican Republic to 1803 China, with frequent outings to Philip’s meditative home base, the sea.
With an M.A in Russian Literature from Harvard University and an M.S. in Counseling from the University of Southern Maine, Ann A. Philips taught writing and literature, worked as a psychotherapist and has been a National Zoo reptile house guide. Her middle-grade novel If You Believe in Mermaids, Don't Tell (Dog Ear, 2007) supports GLBTQ youth. Her poems have appeared in Borderlands, Green Mountains Review, The Sow's Ear, Gargoyle, The Midwest Quarterly, Big Muddy, Little Patuxent Review, The Humanistic Psychologist, The Delmarva Review and elsewhere. A Language the Land is Inventing (WordTech Editions, 2017) is her first collection. Current work explores human-animal relationships and poetry of the animal. Born in Columbia, Missouri, she now lives in historic Washington Grove, Maryland.
Henry Crawford is a poet living and writing in the Washington, DC area. His work has appeared in several journals and online publications including Boulevard, Copper Nickel, Folio, In Stereo Press, BlazeVox13, Verse Daily, Borderline Press, The Offbeat and Mothers Always Write. His first collection of poetry, American Software, is scheduled for publication in the Spring of 2017 by WordTech Communications through its imprint, CW Books.
