What's Up Lanier Heights?

We invite you to join us, the University of Maryland Summer Architecture Studio, for our final exhibition of Lanier Heights research and design proposals! Eleven students have spent six tireless weeks researching and designing in preparation to present to the community of DC. Our event will feature the release of our booklet, What's UP, Lanier Heights?, and the presentation of the student residential designs. To learn more, about our event and the Pop-Up issue, read below.

Event Schedule:

3:30 - 3:45 PM Introduction

3:45 - 5:30 PM Design Presentation and Q/A

5:45 - 7:00 PM Reception, Refreshments Provided

As a class, we’ve visited Lanier Heights, DC, several times to get a sense of the rowhouse typologies and how residential Pop-Ups are impacting the character of the neighborhood. From these visits, we began cataloging the different styles of residential Pop-Ups and the various rowhouse typologies. We also researched the zoning laws in the area and how they have affected the neighborhood and the building of more residential Pop-Ups. During this process, we’ve spoken with people in the neighborhood, ANC commissioners, and architects to get a sense of what the community thinks of residential Pop-Ups and begin to devise potential solutions to rapid population growth in DC. We’ve compiled the information we learned about how residential Pop-Up units relate to Lanier Heights’ historic timeline, recent timeline, real estate, planning and regulations, demographics, stakeholders, and rowhouse typology.
