Joy Ike and Rachel Joy Pletts in Concert

Joy Ike and Rachel Joy Pletts in Concert

Tickets: $12 at the door

Born to Nigerian immigrants,  Joy Ike’s music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, and Fiona Apple. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing. Leaving her career as a publicist in 2008, Ike has spent the last 8 years playing hundreds of shows across the country. She has had the opportunity to share the stage and open for Jeffrey Gaines, Cody Chestnutt, Allen Toussaint, Seth Glier, and Tyrone Wells to name a few. A write-up on NPR's All Things Considered says "The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop...a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small."

Singer/Songwriter Rachel Joy Pletts, originally from Jamestown New York is all about the lyrics. This soulful folk rock mash up delivers the gamut from Dylan like story songs to Adeles’ heart- rending power ballads. The names of Adele, Norah Jones, Janis Joplin, and Sia are often thrown out in comparing this emotive smoky sound and style with artists who are much better known. As stated, the words and delivery are paramount, so accompanying music is purposefully kept simple and sweet allowing the focus and gaze of the audience to be swept up into the story. From intimate living room shows to grand theaters Rachel has a God given ability to draw the audience near and share wonderfully sweet moments together. Rachel can currently be found playing in and around Annapolis, Balt/DC Metro area, and New York City. Her travels have carried her around the US with several solo tours and throughout Spain and Ghana, sharing her music and life changing stories. She has released an EP, Up in Smoke.
